Murcia is dry, sunny and affordable. The coast around the Mar Menor lagoon and the golf resorts inland have large foreign communities, and Cartagena is an underrated port city with Roman, Carthaginian and modernist layers.

Climate

Semi-arid: very hot summers, mild dry winters and little rain.

Best time: October to May.

Food and drink

Market-garden vegetables (it is called Spain’s orchard), zarangollo, caldero rice from the Mar Menor, and Jumilla red wines.

What it’s like

Hot and dry, with huge areas of irrigated farmland. The Mar Menor has had serious pollution problems from farm run-off, with fish die-offs in 2019 and 2021; check the current state before buying nearby.

Living here

Among the lowest property prices on the Mediterranean. Summers are very hot.

Getting around

Murcia city now has a high-speed rail link to Madrid. Most residents drive.
