The Basque Country is small, green and prosperous, with its own ancient language, Euskara, and a food culture that draws people from all over the world. San Sebastián has more Michelin stars per head than almost anywhere; Bilbao turned the Guggenheim into a symbol of urban reinvention.
The region has its own tax system and some of the highest incomes and best public services in Spain.
Climate
Atlantic: mild, wet and green. Summers are warm rather than hot (mid-20s °C), winters cool and rainy. It rains on roughly a third of the days of the year.
Best time: June to September for the beaches; any time for food.
Food and drink
Pintxos, bacalao al pil-pil, grilled turbot and steaks over charcoal, Idiazabal cheese, txakoli wine and cider houses (sagardotegiak) from January to April.
What it’s like
Three provinces: Bizkaia (Bilbao), Gipuzkoa (San Sebastián) and Álava (Vitoria-Gasteiz). The coast is a run of fishing towns and surf beaches; inland are green valleys and mountains. Cities are compact, clean and walkable.
Living here
Wages and prices are both high, especially in San Sebastián, where housing is among the most expensive in Spain. Bilbao and Vitoria are better value. Expect rain: this is not the place for guaranteed sunshine.
Language
Euskara is unrelated to Spanish or any other European language. Spanish is used everywhere, but many children study in Basque-medium schools.
Getting around
Euskotren and Renfe trains connect the towns; Bilbao has a metro. A high-speed line (the “Basque Y”) is still under construction, so Madrid is about 4.5 hours by train or a short flight.
