What happens
Each neighbourhood association builds a falla, some several storeys high, out of wood, cardboard and cork. They appear in the streets on 15 March. At 2 pm every day the mascletà in Plaza del Ayuntamiento is a deafening, rhythmic explosion of firecrackers. On 17 and 18 March, falleras in silk dresses carry flowers to build a huge figure of the Virgin. On the night of the 19th (the Cremà) the fallas are set alight.
