Spain has national holidays, regional holidays (each region adds its own) and two local holidays per town. Shops, banks and offices close; restaurants and bars usually stay open.

National holidays in 2027

Date Holiday
Friday 1 January New Year’s Day
Wednesday 6 January Epiphany (Reyes)
Friday 26 March Good Friday
Saturday 1 May Labour Day
Sunday 15 August Assumption
Tuesday 12 October Spain’s National Day
Monday 1 November All Saints’ Day
Monday 6 December Constitution Day
Wednesday 8 December Immaculate Conception
Saturday 25 December Christmas Day

When a national holiday falls on a Sunday, some regions move it to the Monday. Regions publish their own calendars each autumn.

Common regional holidays

  • Holy Thursday (25 March 2027): most regions except Catalonia and Valencia.
  • Easter Monday (29 March 2027): Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics, the Basque Country and Navarre.
  • Regional days: Andalusia (28 February), Balearics (1 March), Catalonia (11 September), Valencia (9 October), Galicia (25 July), Madrid (2 May), Canary Islands (30 May), and others.
  • 24 June (San Juan): Catalonia and Valencia.

Local holidays

Each town adds two days, usually for its patron saint (for example 15 May in Madrid for San Isidro, 24 September in Barcelona for La Mercè).

Puentes

When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many people take the Monday or Friday off too, making a long weekend (puente). Expect busy roads and trains.
